How they travel: Three 50-foot trailers with air-cushioned suspension and thick rubber flooring are used to transport 10 Clydesdales plus the beer wagon and other equipment. How much they eat and drink: Each hitch horse consumes five to six gallons of whole grains, minerals and vitamins, 50 to 60 pounds of hay, and 30 gallons of water per day.Their horseshoes are about 20 inches long and weigh about five pounds each. What they wear: Each horse is tailor-fitted with a handcrafted collar and harness made of solid brass and patent leather stitched with pure linen thread. They must be at least 18 hands high, geldings at least 4 years old, with a bay coat, four white stockings, a blaze of white on the face, a black mane and a black tail. What it takes to be a Budweiser Clydesdale: Clydesdales must meet specific requirements to be part of the Budweiser hitch. The teams were soon expanded to eight horses each. A second team was quickly purchased and both teams began touring the country. How it started: The first Budweiser Clydesdale team had six horses and was purchased in commemoration of the repeal of prohibition on beer in April 1933.
